2016 Book Challenge Update

I’m happy with my progress so far, in January I read (or listened to) eight books. You’ll notice that these are not actual book reviews, only comments on my feelings about the book. 🙂

I have really enjoyed the Royal Spyness series until this one. It was very slow going, and for the first time ever I turned up the speed on an audio book. I had given up on it ages ago, but decided I’d see if I could finish it. From now on I’m sticking hard and fast to the 50 page rule – if I don’t like it at page 50 I’m done.

I adored Liane Moriarty’s book Big Little Lies and The Last Anniversary did not disappoint. I love Moriarty’s writing style. She paints a beautiful, complex picture without being overly wordy. This is a rich and compelling story. I highly recommend it.

I love YA novels. I’m mentally stuck at about age 15 so they’re perfect. 🙂 The first in this series, Deep Fried and Pickled, was adventurous, funny, and very entertaining. Summer Flambé continued in that vein and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found the character development satisfying, and the story line kept me turning pages.

Book three of the series slowed down a bit, and I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. The plot was just not that interesting. I was disappointed, and am not in a rush to get the next one, although you’ve noticed I did read the whole book. I am a little curious, so perhaps when I get through my giant mountain of TBRs I’ll give book 4 a go.

Mystery and Art in one book? I love it! This is a great book. I fell in love with the characters right away, their little quirks are entertaining. I found the story compelling and hard to put down. Loved it.

More YA. 🙂  I really enjoyed these two books. I’m not all that into the fantasy genre, but these were recommended by Amy over at Bookzilla.

I’ve had this book for ages and ages, and finally decided to pick it up. I have mixed feelings about it. I like the main character – I’ve seen many of the TV episodes on PBS – but I found the book to be too wordy for my taste. James does paint an elaborate picture, I felt like I was there. But it was slow reading for me. If I were a faster reader I would have enjoyed it more. It is a good story though, and worth reading.

Have a great week!
